Northeastern Ohio Housing Officers Honors Founding Members at the Annual Resident Assistant Conference at Ashland University
Little more than 30 years ago, a group of housing professionals from colleges and universities in northeastern Ohio came together to form an organization that would provide development opportunities for both its undergraduate, graduate, and professional staff. The following six individuals helped set the cornerstone for what we have today by selflessly devoting years of their time and effort to insure this organization would grow and make an impact on the lives of students and staff in northeastern Ohio.
On Saturday, January 28, 2017, the following individuals were honored for their dedication to northeastern Ohio and the Student Affairs field:
Ms. Donna Byrnes arrived at John Carroll University in 1978 and continues to work there as the Associate Dean of Students. In her honor, the NEOHO Case Study will hereafter be known as the Donna Byrnes RA Case Study.
Mr. Mike Corr retired from Hiram College after 34 years. To honor his years of service, the NEOHO RA Annual Conference will now be known as the NEOHO Mike Corr RA Conference.
Mr. Jack Fahey retired from Youngstown State University after 35 years and will be remembered for his dedication and hard work there. To commemorate his contributions, the NEOHO Graduate Scholarship will be renamed as the Jack Fahey Graduate Scholarship, and will be awarded annually in the fall.
Mr. Donald Kamalsky retired from Case Western Reserve University, though he continues to work in in the field as Senior Associate for Scion Group Advisory Service. Donald will be remembered for his leadership and support of Village at 115th and for other facilities at CASE. The NEOHO Spirit Trophy, which is awarded at the annual conference, will now be known as the Donald Kamalsky Spirit Award.
Mr. Ronald McDonald studied at University of Akron. Following graduation, he worked in several places before returning to UA, where he remained until 2012. He currently works at Stark State College as Student Success Coach. In acknowledgement of his service, the NEOHO Undergraduate Scholarship will be renamed as the Ronald McDonald Undergraduate Scholarship. It will be awarded each year in the fall.
Mrs. Susan Nickel-Schindewolf retired from Case Western Reserve this past August. She is known for her passion and willingness to help others. To honor her years of dedicated service, the NEOHO RA of the Year Award will hereafter be known as the Sue Nickel-Schindewolf RA of the Year Award.
Sincere thanks go to the staff at Ashland University for hosting the annual conference which began at Oberlin College in 1994.
A special thank you goes to Mary DeNiro, Executive Director of ACUHO-I who graciously honored the founding members and awarded the plaques to each recipient. Mary shared a little history of each candidate and recognized the importance they played in the foundation of NEOHO.
